From Soweto to the World: A Race for Peace

The Race for Peace is a global movement inspired by one of the most powerful youth-led uprisings in history - the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976. On that day, thousands of students in South Africa took to the streets to protest injustice, demanding dignity, education, and freedom. Their bravery was met with violence, and hundreds of young lives were lost. The events of that day shocked the world and marked a turning point in the struggle against apartheid.

In 1994, as South Africa took its first steps into democracy, President Nelson Mandela endorsed the first Race for Peace - a symbolic event using sport as a tool for healing, unity, and hope. The race raised funds for township sports programmes and promoted reconciliation during a pivotal time in the nation’s history.

A Global Movement for Youth and Peace

Today, Race for Peace is evolving into something bigger - a worldwide series of community-led events united by a simple but powerful idea: peace through participation.

By 2026, our goal is to see 20 cities across the globe - from Newcastle to Neuchâtel, Soweto to Shinshiro each hosting their own Race for Peace on June 16, Youth Day. These events are not competitive races for trophies. They are peace walks, fun runs, and community gatherings that honour the spirit of young people past and present and reaffirm our shared commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity.

Each city will bring its own culture, context, and energy to the race, but we are united by a common cause: to uplift youth, promote social cohesion, and stand together in peace.

Why It Matters

In a world facing division, conflict, and growing inequality, the message of Race for Peace has never been more relevant. This is a movement that starts with local action and leads to global change rooted in the South African concept of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.”

Race for Peace connects generations, crosses borders, and celebrates the resilience of communities worldwide. Whether you’re a student in Johannesburg, an artist in Tokyo, a teacher in Newcastle, or an elder in Cape Town you have a role to play in this journey toward peace.
